the arts academy cardiff

The Art and Design Foundation Diploma Course is based at the Arts Academy in Cardiff and is currently run by Bridgend College. The course provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop and enrich their current art and design practice in preparation for taking on a degree course in areas such as Fine Art, Graphics, Media, 3D design, Fashion and Textiles, Ceramics, Photography and more.  Many of our students progress to BA courses across the country whilst some may wish to progress to a specialist arts degree at our local university Cardiff Metropolitan with whom we maintain strong historical ties.

The course provides the support and expertise necessary to take the first steps in the training of creative artists and designers in all fields. It enables students to make the transition from school, college or other backgrounds to the highly competitive specialist demands of Higher Education within art and design. The teaching staff have a wide range of backgrounds and all are practising artists or designers in their own right. They have a great deal of knowledge and experience of art and design courses in the UK and are able to advise students on H.E. progression routes to match the ability and ambition of the student.

In recent years our students have been shortlisted for the WJEC FADEX AWARD for Foundation excellence, one of which was the over all winner and another Highly commended. Last year over 30% of our students achieved Distinctions and many went on to study at prestigious universities such as Ruskin School of Art, Falmouth School of Art, The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Kingston University and UAL: Chelsea College of Arts to name but a few.

We continue to run annual foreign visits for students wishing to experience the art and culture of different cities across Europe and this year we will provide a 5 day trip to Berlin. In previous years we have taken students to BarcelonaFlorence and Krakow.

Many of our students benefit from some of our extra curricular activities such as the design project that we organise in collaboration with Ikea. In addition, we now offer internships to previous students wishing to gain experience of teaching.
